KACHANYI’S DILEMMA
Kachanyi was the wife of Mr Tanto. When her husband died, one of his brothers wanted to take her as wife. Otherwise she would have to refund the bride price once paid for her.
Since Kachanyi did not like this customary practice, she bluntly refused. Therefore she was chased away from her home by her brothers-in-law.

This was not easy for Kachanyi, since she had three children.  She needed to start some business for a living, so she tried to get a loan at the Credit Union. However, the Credit Union demanded some security for the loan. She was asked to produce a land certificate. Since the land was taken over by her brothers-in-law she had no certificate. No other way to obtain a loan was available to her.

Her eldest daughter, who was 14, also needed to go to college, but Kachanyi had no money to send her there. Her relatives then advised her to give her daughter in marriage to a certain man who was 41 years old. This man, whose name was Fula, promised to give her the money she needed to pay back the bride price. She would also get money enough to get shelter for herself and the other two children.

This was a difficult dilemma for Kachanyi. She had to decide very soon what to do with the proposition...
